Penguin in Bondage

The name is a bit strange, I know, but I stumbled upon a Penguin in Bondage after impulse buying a fifth of black strap rum… Cruzan Black Strap Rum to be precise.  Black strap rum has a great spiced, molasses flavor that is a familiar ingredient in a lot of dark rum tiki drinks & can give you the sensation of being on an island even if you’re just sitting in your living room 🙂

I chose the Penguin in Bondage because of the excess of limes and lack of pineapple juice I had on hand, and oddly enough the flavors mix to make a flavorful herbal tiki cocktail.  I’m not a huge fan of sweets cocktails either, but the bit of sweetness that the rum brings is just enough to balance out the strong herbal flavors coming from the Fernet, Falernum & Angostura bitters.  If you enjoyed Erica’s Modified Rum Swizzle, try this one on for size!  It’s sure to have you craving the beach in no time.  Speaking of, our trip to Belize is this weekend so stay tuned!

Penguin in Bondage

Recipe:
Equal parts (1 oz each) of Cruzan Black Strap Rum, Fernet Branca, & Falernum.  Follow with 1/2 oz of lime juice and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.  Shake over ice and strain.
