For those who are looking for an introduction to Fernet Branca, the strongly herbal Italian amaro, the Toronto is a great way to start. The way that the Angostura and Fernet play together is delightful. They rye provides a great backbone and the simple syrup make the balance perfect. This would be perfect for a nice fall or winter night, but to me is great at any time, although the bitterness might not make it the best hot summer day for most people.
2 oz Rye
1/4 oz Fernet Branca
1/4 oz simple syrup (agave nectar also works great)
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Stir with ice, strain, and serve with a twist.
