Whiskey Smash

Reminiscent of a mint julep, the Whiskey Smash its a slightly tarter cousin.  This recipe typically calls for quite a bit of simple syrup and some water, but I felt like that was too watered down.  Having used Buffalo Trace as the ‘mixer’ bourbon, it’s a shame to lose ALL of the flavor.  So instead, I cut down on the sugar and water and just mixed it a bit more over ice before straining it into a low ball or ‘old fashioned’ glass.  On my next venture, I may throw in a bit of Booker’s to a stronger, spicier bourbon flavor.. and maybe a bit more mint.  I’ll provide the ‘textbook’ recipe and the modification so you can try out both or modify to your taste like I did.

Whiskey SmashTextbook Whiskey Smash:
2 lemon slices
4 mint leaves
3/4 oz simple syrup
1 1/2 oz bourbon
1 oz water

Modified Whiskey Smash:
2 lemon slices
3 mint leaves
1/2 oz agave
2 oz Buffalo Trace Bourbon

Muddle mint and lemon slices then pour in simple syrup or agave and bourbon and mix over ice.  In my modified version I stirred with ice instead of adding 1 oz of water to make it less diluted.  Pour in an old fashioned glass over ice & enjoy!
